I have felt for a while now that there is something morally wrong with breeding domesticated companion animals, when so many animals end up in shelters and millions of them are euthanized each year. I understand that there are certain animals which are bred for particular reasons - because they make excellent seeing eye dogs, rescue dogs, or police/drug-sniffing dogs - and it seems reasonable to me to continue with those practices. But, I think the majority of animal breeding is done for selfish reasons that, I think, generally increases suffering. And, I don't see any reason why a person seeking an animal companion can't find a suitable one at a shelter. What do you think?
